This is one in a series of posts about the Akamai 2018 Spring Release. For an overview of the Spring Release, see our post here.
The Akamai Adaptive Media Player (AMP) provides a simple way to insert a quality media playback experience in your web, mobile, and connected-TV applications with SDKs for web, iOS, tvOS, Android, and Chromecast.
Whether you’re building out your OTT service or offering an enterprise webcasting application, Akamai AMP provides a single SDK that pre-integrates playback, delivery, monetization, and measurement to ensure a fast, reliable, quality deployment. This can greatly reduce your work and give you a faster time to market.
The Challenge of Video
Typically you have to integrate a lot of components for quality video application, which are shown in the image below:
There's a significant amount of work that goes into directly including all capabilities from open source, from Akamai, and from many third-party sources. Referencing the above image, on the left side, let’s take a look at some of these:
- Playback – includes several variables and components for many not even shown above, such as: on-demand and live playback, adaptive bitrate management, DVR access, multi-platform DRM implementation, captions that meet government mandates, and new innovations such as 360-degree video.
- Delivery – addresses optimization and approach that enhance or complement video delivery: Akamai Media Acceleration, Low Latency, and readiness for Offline Playback via download managers.
- Monetization – address the capabilities and integrations the player needs to address advertising and subscription support. These include integrations from Google, Freewheel, and Yospace, addressing both client-side and server-side ad insertion, as well as capabilities to work with authentication provider for TV Everywhere and other identity providers.
- Measurement – addresses the many needs to track performance, audience, and content consumption. It is not atypical for business requirements to call for several providers here, including but not limited to: Akamai Media Analytics, Nielsen, Comscore, Adobe, Conviva, Google, and more.
Akamai AMP Can Simplify Your Efforts
As you can see, the challenges can be daunting. There may be over a dozen capabilities to implement and integrate, and specialized knowledge and third-party relationships are required for most. However, with Akamai Adaptive Media Player (AMP), the work can be reduced greatly, as AMP coordinates all activities related to media playback in your applications. AMP pre-instruments these various capabilities for Playback, Delivery, Monetization, and Measurement – all from various sources – into one modular package.
The component diagram (and work effort!) can simplify dramatically, allowing you to focus on the differentiators unique to your business; the user interface and the interface to the content management system and API.
AMP Support Makes a Difference!
Technical Support for AMP is provided by a dedicated, specialized team within Akamai, and they work closely with Akamai Technical Support. For player applications, it’s not always clear where a problem may lie, and AMP support will always help drive to resolution, regardless of the source of the issue.
Specialized Professional Services personnel provide implementation assistance for customers, offering high-touch integration help for both simple and complex implementations on all platforms for web, mobile, and TV.
Additionally, the AMP team is continually updating the player to adapt to the new customer requirements, changes in technical ecosystem, and evolving industry business requirements.
What’s New with AMP
In early 2018 we’re excited to bring several improvements: a much-improved skin module; a new plugin system (third parties are already beginning to take advantage of to extend AMP’s capabilities, more info coming soon); multi-platform DRM; and expanded support for server-side ad insertion.
Additionally, our native SDKs have reached feature parity with our web edition, launching in several new broadcaster applications. With these improvements, we’re excited to help you reach your business goals for media deployments!
